Turkey stopped maritime traffic in the Bosporus Gulf this morning (Monday) after a merchant ship got stuck in the strategic place that connects global maritime trade to the Black Sea.

A Turkish official confirmed that several ships were sent this morning in an attempt to rescue the Ukrainian ship bearing the name MKK-1, which ran aground on the shores of the Gulf at 07:30 am (local time).

This is a merchant ship carrying a load of peas as part of the agreement known as the “Joint Grain Initiative” signed between Russia and Ukraine under the auspices of the United Nations and allowing the export of goods and grains.

The Turkish authorities estimate that the accident will be resolved in the coming hours.

The last ship that got stuck and caused serious problems in maritime trade was the one that came ashore in the Suez Canal in March 2021. It blocked the passage of hundreds of ships in the canal for six days, causing tremendous economic damage.
