Love triumphed over adversity as Maksym Merezhko, 43, and Yuliia Dluzhynska, 39, from Ukraine’s military exchanged vows in a heartwarming wedding ceremony. The couple, who serve on the front lines in the conflict-ridden Donetsk region, had a unique celebration organized by the charity group Zemliachky, which supports female soldiers.

Despite their demanding schedules and the harsh realities of war, Merezhko and Dluzhynska were determined to have a memorable wedding. The couple had already completed the legal formalities, but they yearned for a traditional ceremony. Zemliachky stepped in to provide everything the couple needed, from attire and rings to the venue and honeymoon, all free of charge.

“It takes a lot of time to organize a wedding, and when you are on the front line, you don’t have that free time,” shared Kseniia Drahaniuk, co-founder of Zemliachky. The charity group’s initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden and stress of planning for military couples like Merezhko and Dluzhynska.

The tender moments were captured as Dluzhynska walked down the aisle adorned in an elegant white gown. The ceremony was filled with heartfelt gestures as Merezhko showered the bride with kisses throughout the event. Friends and family may have been absent, but the Zemliachky volunteers stood in as witnesses, ensuring the lovebirds had a day to remember.

Amidst the joyous celebration, thoughts of the ongoing war were never far from their minds. The ceremony concluded with a rallying cry of “Slava Ukraini” (Glory to Ukraine!) and a cake decorated like the national flag. The couple savored a 2021 vintage champagne from the war-torn city of Bakhmut.

Reflecting on their future, Merezhko expressed his optimism, saying, “We will live. We will have children, then grandchildren, and we will babysit the grandchildren. I will teach my grandchildren to fish and plant potatoes.” Meanwhile, Dluzhynska hopes for one simple outcome – survival.

After a brief honeymoon in the Carpathian Mountains, the couple plans to return to their military duties in Donetsk. Their journey continues on the front line, where their love and commitment to their country remain unwavering.

The selfless dedication of these two individuals gives hope to many in Ukraine who face the daily challenges of war. Merezhko and Dluzhynska’s inspiring love story reminds us of the power of love and the indomitable spirit of those who serve their country.
