Ukrainian war, the mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boichenko, accuses Russia of trying to “wipe” this besieged Ukrainian city “from the face of the earth”. In statements to the Ukrainian agency UNIAN he pointed the finger at the Russian military for “ruthless actions” against the inhabitants of the city. “They have no orders to protect anyone – he said – Their task is simply to wipe the city off the face of the earth, even its inhabitants”. It is genocide, he insisted, “there can be no other definition”.
Mariupol remains Ukrainian “and our soldiers are doing everything to ensure that this is also the case in the future”, she continued, while admitting that some areas of the city are under Russian control. “The city is surrounded – she said – The circle is tightened”. Mariupol’s future? “Time will tell.”
Local authorities recently denounced the killing of 2,187 civilians since the start of the war and Boichenko commented: “I can say that the toll is significantly higher now.”
