On the sidelines of an event, Uli Hoeneß speaks about the late Franz Beckenbauer. It is not the first time that he becomes emotional and fights back tears.

With a verbal all-round attack on all possible topics and, among other things, with a transfer freeze that he imposed, Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß returned from the summer break in his usual eloquent manner. (Read more about this here.)

But there was one topic that made Hoeneß particularly emotional and he even fought back tears when he spoke about it. What touched the 72-year-old so much was once again his friend Franz Beckenbauer (†78), who died in January.

“I often catch myself thinking about him. I like sitting on my terrace. If I’m feeling good, I smoke a cigar and drink a glass of wine. Then you start to think,” said Hoeneß and revealed: “Especially at the end of his rehab, he often came to see me at Tegernsee. We became much closer there than we were when he was a player. I miss his lightness. I will miss that forever.”

At Beckenbauer’s memorial service in the Allianz Arena, Hoeneß had already mourned his long-time companion with a moving speech. “Dear Franz, you have been dead for twelve days now. To be honest, I miss you very much. Rest in peace. A peace that you unfortunately have not been able to enjoy in the last few years in the way that you deserve it. Thank you very much,” he said at the time. (Read more about this here: When he arrived, it was emotional.)
