On April 30, Uljin-gun (Governor Son Byeong-bok) held a kick-off meeting of the “Expert Group Committee to Establish a Strategy for Activating Large-Scale Hydrogen Production at Uljin Nuclear Power Plant” (hereinafter “Expert Group Committee”).

This meeting was promoted to bring together hydrogen experts from industry, academia, research, and government to share opinions with the goal of successfully establishing the Uljin nuclear hydrogen industry cluster and creating a nuclear hydrogen full-cycle industrial ecosystem.

On this day, Chairman Kwon Hyuk-soo of the Korea Energy Industry Promotion Agency announced a strategy for establishing large-capacity hydrogen production and industrial revitalization at Uljin nuclear power.

Through his presentation, Chairman Kwon identified an agenda that can promote global competitiveness at an early stage for effective hydrogen industrialization by integrating industry, academia, research institutes, and government in connection with the nuclear clean hydrogen industry, and large-scale use of nuclear electricity to build growth engines. Methods for hydrogen production and utilization were presented.

In addition, in-depth discussions by division were held on the role and necessity as a domestic clean hydrogen production base to lead the clean hydrogen economy, and the necessity and solutions for creating a global ecosystem according to the step-by-step direction.

In his greeting, Uljin County Governor Son Byeong-bok said, “The Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex has sufficient corporate demand and has a large economic impact, so exemption from the preliminary feasibility study will be decided at the cabinet meeting in May.” He added, “To supply carbon-free power, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and KEPCO “We are solving difficult tasks through consultation with related organizations,” he said. He also expressed his gratitude to the expert group members who “joined us in this important first step toward the successful establishment of a nuclear hydrogen industry cluster and the creation of a nuclear clean hydrogen full-cycle industrial ecosystem.”

In response to the government’s energy policy, the ‘Expert Group Committee’ meeting, which aims to further solidify national energy security and contribute to securing the competitiveness of the future energy industry through a major shift in the energy paradigm, will be held a total of 5 times, and will be held for a total of 5 times to utilize nuclear energy. We plan to help prepare practical policy alternatives necessary to create a full-cycle industrial ecosystem for nuclear clean hydrogen in Uljin, including establishing strategies to revitalize large-capacity hydrogen production, discovering institutional improvement plans, discovering industrialization support strategies, and establishing safety management plans.
