Uljin-gun is taking preemptive measures for the opening of the Donghae Line (Pohang-Samcheok). Uljin-gun used to be called a place that was “unreachable by scratching your back” due to its inconvenient transportation. However, Uljin-gun has established itself as a tourist destination that “even if there are people who have never been there, there are no people who have only been there once,” despite its difficult transportation conditions, and has recently achieved exemption from preliminary feasibility studies for the creation of a “nuclear hydrogen national industrial complex,” laying the foundation for a leap forward.
Uljin County has been running towards tomorrow without being concerned about the given situation or environment. Now, with the opening of the railroad era, a new history has been written.
New connections, closer to the world!
The Donghae Line Pohang-Samcheok section is expected to open in December, with trains running to Uljin as well.
The Donghae Line (Pohang-Samcheok) opened in the first stage from Pohang to Yeongdeok in 2018, and the Yeongdeok-Samcheok section began construction in 2014 and is scheduled to open in December of this year.
With the opening of the Donghae Line, the ‘ITX-Maeum’ will be operated on the single-track electrification project section of the Donghae Line, and the exact transportation schedule will be confirmed around the fall of this year according to the railway construction’s transportation plan.
Uljin County expects that the opening of this railway will help improve the inconvenience of local residents by building a new transportation network and increasing accessibility to external regions, and will also help local development by attracting more tourists to Uljin County. It also anticipates that balanced development and sustainable growth will be achieved in the economic zone along the east coast.
The Uljin Railway Era, Prepare Thoroughly!
Uljin County is proactively preparing to ensure that the opening of the Donghae Line will be effective in promoting the development of Uljin County and improving the convenience of its residents.
First, in relation to railway operation, we are continuously making suggestions and discussing with relevant organizations to ‘open a Seoul route without transfers.’
In addition, we are continuing our efforts to ensure that the ‘KTX-Ieum’ train can run in parallel with the previously planned ‘ITX-Maeum’.
With the opening of the railroad era, full preparations are being made for tourists visiting Uljin.
We plan to establish a strategy to attract tourists following the opening of the train service and provide incentives for tourism products that link railways and public transportation to further enhance tourism accessibility.
From September to December, before the opening of the railway, we will operate a residential railway travel product linked to nearby Pohang, Yeongju, and Donghae Stations, and from January 2025, we plan to operate a railway travel program that directly attracts passengers to Uljin Station.
In addition, we are exploring various ways to improve the convenience of moving from the train station to Uljin tourist sites.
A new path, a step towards a better Uljin!
The opening of the Donghae Line has a lot of meaning beyond the simple introduction of a means of transportation. Mr. A, who is from Uljin, said, “I never thought I would be able to go to my hometown by train, but now that the train has opened, I feel a new sense of emotion.”
Also, tourist B, who visited Uljin, said, “I like Uljin and want to visit it often, but I hesitated because it is difficult to get there by car. But if there is a train, I think I will be able to come more often.”
For some, it is a new path to their hometown, for others, it is a convenient path for travel, and for others, it is a path of hope toward a better Uljin County.
Uljin County plans to do its best to prepare for the opening of the railroad so that it can become an important milestone for economic and cultural development.
Uljin County Governor Son Byeong-bok said, “The opening of the railroad, which has been a long-awaited project for the county residents, is expected to reduce the inconvenience of the county residents traveling to the big city and help revitalize the local economy and develop the tourism industry,” and added, “Since the operation plan has not been finalized yet, we will continue to seek ways to help Uljin County.” He also said, “Visiting Uljin by railroad will provide convenience as well as a unique pleasure, so I hope many people will visit Uljin.”
