Since being designated as a candidate site for the Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex (hereinafter referred to as ‘Uljin National Industrial Complex’) last year, Uljin-gun has rapidly promoted the selection of the national industrial complex creation project implementer, the signing of a win-win agreement, the new national industrial complex corporate information session, and the signing of the basic agreement. As a result, the government announced the push for exemption from the preliminary feasibility study, and Uljin-gun signed an occupancy agreement with six large companies wishing to move in (Lotte Chemical, GS Engineering & Construction, GS Energy, Samsung E&A, Hyosung Heavy Industries, BHI) and was exempted from the preliminary feasibility study in May. announced that it will be confirmed.
Uljin-gun is a region with the largest number of nuclear power plants in the world, which will have 10 nuclear power plants in the future, including Shin-Hanul Units 3 and 4, and has been actively pursuing the nuclear industry in order to meet the national energy policy for the past 40 years. He said that by actively attracting the nuclear hydrogen industry, which is also included in the government’s national agenda, it is expected to be reborn as a core industrial base that leads the national economy and balanced regional development in the future.
In the Uljin National Industrial Complex, domestic hydrogen-related anchor companies, small and medium-sized manufacturers, and research facilities will be integrated. In addition to the hydrogen production specialized complex, a full-cycle hydrogen industrial ecosystem including storage, transportation, and utilization will be created, which is a key task in the era of carbon neutrality. It is expected that the Uljin National Industrial Complex will lead the national hydrogen industry.
Meanwhile, the hosting of the Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex is expected to bring about KRW 17 trillion in production and 37,000 employment-inducing effects, giving hope and vitality to the region through job creation and population influx.
Uljin County Mayor Son Byeong-bok said, “The Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex is the first step toward achieving sustainable development and carbon neutrality not only for Uljin but also for the Republic of Korea.” “There remain challenges and procedures, such as securing hydrogen production technology, but we will mobilize all administrative power to ensure that the Uljin National Industrial Complex is established as soon as possible,” he said.
He continued, “By establishing a hydrogen full-cycle industrial ecosystem, nurturing industrial manpower by designating industry-academia convergence zones and attracting universities, and expanding industrial-based SOC such as railways, highways, and export ports for logistics and hydrogen transportation, we will create an abundance of jobs as a global nuclear hydrogen hub. “We will create a local city where people gather,” he emphasized.
