UM6P-Rabat: Opening of a High-Level Forum on Artificial Intelligence, a lever for development in Africa

Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this three-day international conclave is initiated by the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) through its International Center for Artificial Intelligence of Morocco “AI Movement”, in partnership with UNESCO, the participation of representatives from more than 30 countries, including around fifteen African countries, with the aim of laying the foundations for an African strategy dedicated to AI.

This event brings together global leaders, technology experts, policy makers and civil society representatives to discuss the latest advances in AI in Morocco and the rest of Africa.

The Forum programme includes panel discussions, workshops, networking sessions for start-ups and exhibitions with the objectives of discussing strategies and policies for AI in Africa, sharing advances in AI on the continent, debating AI governance on key themes, launching capacity building initiatives for various groups and facilitating collaborations between African and global AI hubs.

Several panels are on the program including “international conversations on AI”, “an AI strategy for Africa – What’s next?”, “African parliaments and AI governance” and “the role of the judiciary in AI governance”.

Similarly, participants will discuss the contributions and collaborations of African researchers to bring African languages ​​into the era of AI, science and technology diplomacy, AI ethics in Africa, AI and the promotion of democracy for peace and development in Africa and the future of technologies: Developing a bottom-up vision for 2050.

The work will also focus on the implications of AI for cybersecurity, AI and the work of artists in Africa, African women and the development of cutting-edge AI solutions, experiences of AI innovation in Europe and global AI partnerships.

Likewise, the menu also includes inspiring TED-style talks, startupper success stories, and interactive sessions led by AI experts from Africa, America, Europe, China and the Middle East.

This Forum will be marked by the official launch in Rabat, under the aegis of UNESCO, of the first Category II AI Center in Africa, which symbolizes a decisive step towards the integration of AI into the continent’s development strategies.

The International Center for Artificial Intelligence of Morocco “AI Movement” is a research and development center created in March 2021 by UM6P, with the ambition of being a regional AI hub on the African continent.

In this line, it was designated a UNESCO category II center in November 2023 and, consequently, recognized as a center of excellence in the field of AI and data sciences on the African continent.
