With the aim of promoting the importance of self-diagnosis, Umbrella, a brand committed to skin protection, together with the Ecuadorian Psoriasis Foundation, announces the launch of “Your skin speaks to you, look at yourself”, an initiative that will implement collaborative actions with various actors to educate the community on how early detection can make a difference in the fight against skin cancer.

In Ecuador, this type of cancer is mainly caused by unprotected sun exposure and can give early warnings visible on the skin. According to the Society for the Fight against Cancer (SOLCA), during 2014 in the city of Quito, there was an average of 33 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer per 100,000 inhabitants. By 2020, the incidence rose to 41.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in men and 36.7 in women, with an upward trend.

“At Umbrella we are aware that a more informed society is a healthier society,” said Gilmar Zárate, Umbrella Product Manager. “Our goal is to empower people with the knowledge and tools necessary to detect any skin abnormality early. We firmly believe that, through education and awareness, we can significantly reduce cases of skin cancer and save lives,” said the Umbrella spokesperson.

The campaign will run during the months of June, July and August 2024, implementing a series of information and educational actions nationwide in Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca. The planned activities include:

Informative talks and educational workshops: Health and education professionals work to develop habits for the care and protection from UVA, UVB, blue and infrared light. In 2024, more than 35 educational institutions are part of this campaign, impacting a total of approximately 5,000 people trained nationwide.

Free medical brigades: Teams of dermatologists will carry out free skin assessments at various points in the main cities of Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca, allowing the population to access early diagnosis and medical guidance.
