Quetzaltenango has a new indigenous queen: Melany de los Angeles Solis Corteza 19-year-old girl who was named as Umial Tinimit Re Xelajuj No’j 2024-2025 in a gala full of culture and tradition held on Saturday, August 24 at the Municipal Theater of Quetzaltenango.

He certamen Umial Tinimit Re Exalted No’j -which celebrates the beauty and commitment of indigenous women from Quetzaltenango- is a tradition that has been celebrated for 80 years in the city of El Alto, prior to the Independence festivities that take place in the department.

Election of Umial Tinimit Re Xelajuj No’j 2024

Three outstanding young women participated in this year’s edition: Gabriela Mayté Son Coyoy, from the Pop Wuj sociocultural group; Estefany Lucía Poz Ixcatcoy, from the Balam sociocultural group; and Melany de los Ángeles Solís Cortez, from the K’astajib’al No’j sociocultural group. The candidates participated in a series of activities prior to the final gala, including a presentation walk, socializing, and their official presentation to the authorities.

On the night of August 24, during the coronation ceremony, the candidates danced the son with Wendy de León, Umial Tinimit Re Xelajuj No’j 2023, and individually, each one shared a message with the public and answered the jury’s questions. The night ended with the revelation of the name of the new “Daughter of the People of Xelajú.”

After being named the new Indigenous Queen of Quetzaltenango, Melany Solís shared an emotional message of gratitude: «First of all, I want to thank the Creator and Former for giving me this opportunity, my father Carlos Aníbal Solís and my uncle Luis Alfonso Cordero Ixcolín, who accompany me spiritually and have transmitted their energies to me in this ceremony. To the Cortez Ixcolín family and the great K’astajib’al No’j family, thank you very much for the support and accompaniment you have given me. I feel very happy and joyful to be your spokesperson and, now, that of the Quetzaltecan youth. Thank you very much.»

Melany is 19 years old and is a bilingual intercultural early childhood education teacher. She is currently in her fourth semester of a degree in Legal and Social Sciences at the Centro Universitario de Occidente (CUNOC). In addition to her studies, the Quetzalteca native dedicates her time to cultural dance with her group, enjoys reading, painting and music, and deeply values ​​the time she spends with her family and friends.

Melany is a Quetzalteca proud of her roots and always looks for ways to share her culture with other people. Through her participation and her election as Umial Tinimit Re Xelajuj No’j she seeks to contribute to the preservation of values ​​and traditions to keep alive the ancient culture of the K’iché Maya people of Quetzaltenango.
