UN appoints Georgian expert to lead development programme in Libya

The United Nations announced the appointment of Dr. Sophie Kimkhadze, a Georgian national, “as the new Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Libya. Kimkhadze will lead the United Nations’ efforts in Libya to promote stability and comprehensive development.”

According to the Wall Agency, “It will focus on a range of vital issues, including supporting the building of strong democratic institutions, enhancing society’s resilience to conflicts and climate change, and driving sustainable economic growth.”

Dr. Kimkhadze expressed her “enthusiasm to assume this position,” stressing “the importance of working with Libyan and international partners to achieve sustainable development goals in Libya.”

It is noteworthy that Dr. Kimkhadze has extensive experience working with the United Nations, exceeding 25 years in leadership and technical advisory roles, including 17 years with the United Nations Development Programme.

She started her career in Georgia and has worked in several countries around the world, including Armenia, Nepal, Indonesia and Somalia. She holds a PhD in Mathematics from the Georgian Academy of Sciences and a Master’s degree in Economics and Politics from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.

The appointment of Dr. Sophie Kimkhadze represents an important step in the United Nations’ efforts to support Libya on its path towards stability and development, and she is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing international cooperation and providing the technical and financial support necessary to achieve sustainable development in Libya.
