The hosts of the next United Nations (UN) climate summit urged the world to Don’t “waste time” blaming others for global warming, but rather addressing the problem.
During a meeting of “pre-COP” delegates in Azerbaijan, the Azeri president, Ilham Aliyev, expressed the need to “to participate constructively and in good faith for the good of humanity,” to address the climate crisis.
Furthermore, Aliyev emphasized that although States have “common but differentiated responsibilities (…) they should set aside disagreements, stop blaming each other and find common ground.”
“We cannot afford waste time in defining who is guilty of global warming, or who caused the most environmental damage,” he added.
Despite the situation facing the world, Azerbaijan, a major oil and gas producer, promised to increase its production of fossil fuelswhich sparked criticism about the coherence of its position in relation to the global transition towards more sustainable energies.
