UN cuts financial aid to Rohingya Muslims; 1 million refugees are starving

Dhaka: Aljazeera reports that the United Nations has cut financial aid to the Rohingya refugees. Following this, the report also points out that more than one million Rohingya Muslims living as refugees in Bangladesh are suffering from severe hunger and food shortage.

The UN’s contribution to global food security fell by nearly US$125 million last year. 12 dollars per person has been reduced to 10 dollars.

UN sources said that if the world countries do not intervene urgently, there is a possibility that there will be a decrease in the money given.

Refugees living in Bangladeshi camps currently have limitations on self-employment and income generation. Because of that, starvation and malnutrition are the continuation story here.

“We have no other source of income. Now the ration given has also been reduced. I can’t even feed my son rice now.

The nut cream they gave him kept him alive. Now that too has stopped. There is no telling how long he will survive,’ says Raheela Begum at the camp.

According to UN data, around 10 lakh Rohingya Muslims who left the country by boat during the 2017 Myanmar massacre are living in camps in Bangladesh.

The government of Bangladesh is also facing a big crisis as the Myanmar government has not taken a positive stand on the matter of accepting them.

Tom Andrews, the rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Committee, has asked for the urgent intervention of the United Nations in the problem.

“The shortfall in food supply needs to be addressed. It is a life and death struggle for the Rohingya people.

This action is against the conscience of the international community. Malnutrition and disease are already rampant in the camps,’ he said.
