Speaking during the work of the High-Level Segment of the 6th UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), of which she chairs, Ms. Benali highlighted Morocco‘s unwavering commitment and determination towards a resolute vision and responsible for environmental policy.
In this regard, she cited the New development model, which is part of a sustainability perspective, establishes humans as the main target of all development and inspires the National Sustainable Development Strategy, currently in the final phase of overhaul.
This strategy aims to ensure a transition towards a green and inclusive economy by 2030 by defining ambitious objectives, in terms of the development of renewable energies (more than 52% renewable energy by 2030), reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and protection of biodiversity, she said.
In addition, the minister highlighted the pan-African approach adopted by the Kingdom, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King, and which places sustainable development needs at the heart of its cooperation programs in the Continent, citing in particular the launch of the initiative for access of Sahel countries to the Atlantic.
According to her, such ambitious projects significantly and sustainably improve the contribution of African states to global economic exchanges and strengthen the region’s resilience, in consolidation of ambitious initiatives already undertaken, notably the three Congo Basin Climate Commissions. , the Sahel and African island states, as well as other flagship initiatives such as “Adaptation of Agriculture in Africa”.
On the other hand, the government official insisted on the imperative of collective and concrete action in favor of the protection of the planet, as well as on the need to accelerate action and strengthen the confidence of the international community in environmental multilateralism and in international cooperation for a sustainable future.
The opening session of this segment which brought together several heads of state and government was chaired by Ms. Leila Benali and marked in particular by speeches from the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, the President of the General Assembly of the Nations Dennis Francis and Director General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The work of the 6th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), which opened Monday at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, under the presidency of the Kingdom of Morocco, continues until Friday.
Chaired by Ms. Benali, this session is devoted to the examination and adoption of several resolutions and decisions relating to the role of multilateralism and the importance of sustainable, inclusive and effective actions.
The Assembly meets every two years and elects during each session a bureau of 10 members (1 president, 8 vice-presidents and a rapporteur) respecting the principle of equitable regional distribution.
Morocco was elected President of this Assembly during UNEA-5.2, held in March 2022 for a two-year mandate.
