As a prelude to the international day of support for victims of torture commemorated every June 26, UN Human Rights is organizing in the administrative region of Boké, an awareness campaign for 100 elements of the police, the gendarmerie and the army. on the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Over the past ten years, the support programs for the Guinean State which have been set up by the UN Human Rights Office have made it possible to strengthen the legal and institutional framework relating to the protection of human rights. rights, and also to build the capacity of State agents responsible for law enforcement. This UN human rights action has helped to significantly improve the human rights situation in Guinea.

Despite notable progress, many concerns persist, particularly with regard to the procedures for the arrest, interrogation, detention and trial of persons deprived of their liberty.

During the various visits carried out by the UN Human Rights Office in places of detention, in particular prisons, several people in pre-trial detention and exceeding the legal duration were identified. In addition to this, the conditions of detention of these people are deplorable due to prison overcrowding, lack of hygiene, food, health care and drinking water.

According to the organizers, this mission of Human Rights Officers has as its main objective the implementation of the UN human rights mandate relating to the promotion and protection of human rights in Guinea.

“Precisely, it aims to collect quantitative and qualitative information on respect for the fundamental rights of persons placed in police custody; Prevent cases of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; Identify cases of human rights concerns and discuss them with the authorities concerned in order to find adequate solutions; Discuss with judicial police officers and magistrates on the promotion and protection of human rights in general, and those of persons deprived of their liberty in particular; Sensitize law enforcement officials on good practices, compliance with legal procedures relating to the functioning of the criminal chain; Inquire about the conditions of detention in prisons and discuss with prison officials on ways to improve said conditions,” they explained.
