The UN mission welcomed the meeting of members of the House of Representatives and the State Council in Cairo, noting the need for any steps towards Libyan consensus to be comprehensive and include a clear path towards national elections.

In its statement, the mission expressed its welcome for all efforts aimed at achieving a Libyan-Libyan consensus that facilitates a political process led and owned by Libyans and leads to the holding of national elections.

The mission encouraged the members of the two councils participating in the Cairo meeting to build on what was agreed upon, while taking an approach that includes other concerned Libyan parties, so that the outcomes of their meeting lead to a politically implementable solution.

The mission renewed its commitment to continue efforts to reach a political agreement that addresses all contentious issues.

Members of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State met last Thursday in Cairo and announced their agreement to adhere to the necessity of holding presidential and legislative elections in accordance with the laws agreed upon and issued by the House of Representatives, while working to continue expanding the circle of consensus.

According to the final statement of the meeting, the attendees agreed to form a new unified government by calling on the House of Representatives to announce the opening of nominations and begin receiving endorsements and studying the files of the candidates.
