The United Nations Support Mission in Libya condemned the armed clashes that erupted in Tajoura yesterday, Friday, and the subsequent military build-up in and around the capital, Tripoli.
In a statement obtained by “Ain Libya”, the mission expressed its deep concern over reports of loss of life, injuries among civilians, and the displacement of many families.
The Mission also condemned the use of heavy weapons and ammunition by the fighting formations in populated areas, and reminded all parties of their obligations to protect civilians at all times.
The United Nations mission welcomed the de-escalation efforts and the agreement to cease hostilities, calling on all parties to fully adhere to it, noting at the same time its continued contacts with the authorities and urging them to assume their responsibilities by ensuring an end to armed clashes, restoring calm and tranquility to populated areas, and holding those involved accountable.
The UN mission considered these clashes as a reminder of the urgent need to unify the military and security services and establish legitimate and accountable institutions, and it also sees them as a reason to accelerate the launch of a comprehensive political process that leads to credible elections and paves the way for achieving lasting stability and prosperity for the Libyan people.
