The United Nations Mission in Libya welcomed the convening of the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum in Tripoli, considering it an opportunity to move forward in adopting a human rights-based approach to migration governance.

The mission pointed out in a statement the need for concerted international efforts based on shared responsibility and full respect for human rights in order to address the current challenges of migration.

The Mission affirmed its readiness to support initiatives aimed at implementing a human rights-based approach to dealing with the complex reality of migration.

The mission also called on the Libyan authorities to adopt a comprehensive framework of laws and public policies to deal with migrants and refugees in line with Libya’s international obligations in the field of international human rights law and refugee protection.

On Wednesday, the capital, Tripoli, hosted a broad forum on immigration, in which heads of state and government participated, most notably: Malta, Italy, Chad, and Tunisia.

The closing statement of the forum stressed the importance of cooperation and solidarity between countries and institutions to find comprehensive solutions to the problem of irregular migration.

The statement stressed the need to implement strategies that address the roots of the problem of illegal immigration, taking into account development and human rights issues.

Participants in the Forum looked forward to building a future in which migration is managed effectively, humanely and with respect for the dignity of all individuals.

The final statement stressed that Tripoli’s sponsorship of such an event is an indication of the Government of National Unity’s awareness of the importance of addressing migration at a time when the region is witnessing a decline in stability and security.

The statement praised the efforts made by all participants, funders and the institutions organising the forum in shaping a strategic and humanitarian approach to migration.
