UN mission welcomes progress in Central Bank consultations

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed the progress made on the principles, criteria and deadlines that should govern the transitional period leading to the appointment of a new governor and board of directors of the Central Bank of Libya, while expressing its regret that the two parties (the House of Representatives and the High Council of State) have not yet reached a final agreement.

The mission said in a statement that it facilitated, for the second day in a row, consultations between representatives of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State regarding the ongoing crisis in the Central Bank of Libya.

The statement indicated that these consultations constitute a continuation of the mission’s tireless efforts to find a solution that restores this vital institution’s role within the local and international financial system.

The UN mission reminded all Libyan parties of their responsibility to address this crisis urgently, as its continuation poses serious risks to the well-being of Libyans and to Libya’s relations with its international partners, according to the statement.

The mission statement also called on the parties to give priority to Libya’s supreme interest and remove the Central Bank from the circle of political conflicts.

The UN mission reiterated that unilateral decisions taken by all parties across the country would undermine trust between political and security actors and perpetuate institutional divisions.

The mission added in its statement: “Purposeful and comprehensive dialogue remains the only way to achieve consensus among Libyans, break the vicious cycle of transitional stages, and lead Libya to sustainable peace and stability.”
