The threat of escalation between Lebanon and Israel against the backdrop of ongoing mutual shelling is real; the parties will not be able to resolve the conflict by force. This was stated by the commander of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Spanish General Aroldo Lazaro, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“On the occasion of the end of Ramadan and the onset of Eid al-Fitr, UNIFIL calls on the parties to cease hostilities and move towards a permanent ceasefire and a lasting solution to the conflict,” Lazaro said in a statement. “The threat of escalation is real. The current confrontation and violence cannot be ended by military means, the only way is a political and diplomatic solution,” he said.
The UNIFIL commander said that peacekeepers are in contact with the Lebanese and Israeli authorities to ensure the safety of those who are restoring infrastructure destroyed by shelling and providing humanitarian assistance.
The situation in the Middle East sharply worsened after the infiltration of militants of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, accompanied by the killing of residents of border settlements and the taking of hostages. Israel began retaliating against the enclave and certain areas of Lebanon and Syria.
