WORLD – On October 24, Antonio Guterres told the Security Council that “lThe Palestinian people have been the victims of 56 years of suffocating occupation. The Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, calls for his immediate resignation.

The United Nations Security Council met in New York on Wednesday, October 24, for a long-planned quarterly meeting. The discussions focused on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

“Hamas attacks do not happen out of nowhere”

During his speech, Antonio Guterres denounced “clear violations” of humanitarian law in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire.

He then claimed that he was ““important to recognize that Hamas attacks are not the result of nothingness,” recalling that “the Palestinian people have been the victims of 56 years of suffocating occupation”.

“They have seen their lands continually dispossessed by settlements in a climate of violence, their economy has withered, the people have been displaced and their homes have been destroyed. Their hopes for a political solution have disappeared,” he continued. He also recalled that “the misfortunes of the Palestinian people cannot justify the horrible attack perpetrated by Hamas, and these horrible attacks cannot justify the collective punishment inflicted on the Palestinian people.”

“By saying these heinous attacks were not born in a vacuum, you are condoning terrorism”

Upon leaving the Council, Ambassador Erdan immediately told journalists that the UN Secretary General, emphasizing that the Hamas attacks “did not appear out of nowhere,” justified terrorism.

“The UN was created to prevent atrocities as barbaric as those committed by Hamas. But it fails and Mr. Secretary General has lost all morality and impartiality (…). How can he in any way justify the terrible atrocities that happened to our innocent civilians?” accused the Israeli diplomat. He then demanded the immediate resignation of Antonio Guterres “unless he apologizes immediately”.

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen also tweeted that he refused to meet the UN chief on October 24.
