UN Secretary-General calls for peace in Gaza and Sudan

United Nations (New York) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for peace in Gaza and Sudan in New York.

“In Gaza, Sudan and beyond, this is the time for peace,” the UN chief stressed during a briefing to mark the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

He called for honoring the spirit of the holy month “by silencing the guns, and overcoming all obstacles to ensure the delivery of life-saving aid at the speed and massive scale required.”

The senior UN official further indicated that for months, leaders have been calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the immediate release of all hostages.

“I call on political, religious and community leaders around the world to do everything in their power to make this holy period a time of empathy, action and peace,” he pleaded, stressing that “the suffering must end.”

Regarding the situation in Sudan, the UN Secretary-General renewed his call for a cessation of hostilities between the parties to the conflict.

“The fighting must stop for the sake of the Sudanese people who are facing hunger, horrors and untold hardship,” he said.
