The United Nations (UN) is fully prepared to cooperate with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in matters of conflict resolution and prevention.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated this in an interview with the Kazakh TV channel Zhibek Zholy (Silk Road).

“We can work together, first of all, in preventing conflicts. It is good to resolve conflicts, but it is better to avoid them <...> We can work together in the area of combating terrorism, he stressed. “Our Counter-Terrorism Office is ready to cooperate fully with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in connection with your own problems related to violent extremism and terrorism.”

The Secretary General of the world organization noted that the UN and the SCO are committed to peace, dialogue, problem solving and the vision of a single world that is not divided and fragmented. “I think that cooperation between the UN and the SCO can help bring different parts of the world closer together and limit the damage caused by the fact that superpowers, I think, are at odds with each other. When superpowers are at odds with each other, countries like Kazakhstan play a very important role. And organizations like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization play a very important role to make sure that we are able to resolve conflicts,” Guterres added.

Meanwhile, earlier in an interview with TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman, the UN Secretary General stated that international associations such as the SCO, BRICS, the African Union or the Organization of Islamic Cooperation should be fundamental partners of the UN. He emphasized that there are a number of situations “when regional organizations can solve problems that are beyond the UN’s power.”
