UN Secretary General António Guterres urged Russia, the US and NATO to avoid actions that would lead to an escalation of tensions in relations. This was stated by Deputy Spokesperson of the Secretary General of the World Organization Farhan Haq.

“The UN Secretary General wishes the parties to avoid rhetoric and other [вещей], which can lead to an escalation of the situation, ”said Hack (quoted by TASS). Guterres himself emphasized the importance of establishing a dialogue between Russia and the United States and NATO. According to him, the aggravation of the situation will become “a catastrophe for the whole of Europe”, which is why the entire world community is currently following the development of the situation.

On January 10, in Geneva, the Russian and American delegations discussed security guarantees. In addition, a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held on January 12, and a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council was held in Vienna on January 13. The main requirement of the Russian Federation was the refusal to expand NATO to the east, including the refusal to accept Ukraine into the alliance, as well as the imposition of restrictions on the deployment of offensive weapons near Russian borders.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov called the results of the meetings unsuccessful. According to Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, during the consultations, the United States and its allies did not give a pronounced negative answer, but at the same time they did not express their readiness to meet Russia’s key demands.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said following the talks that the alliance wishes to resume the work of its mission, as well as the Russian diplomatic presence at its headquarters in Brussels. In addition, according to him, the military bloc is ready for mutual arms control, which will extend to conventional and nuclear forces. At the same time, he stated that only Kiev and 30 member states of the bloc can decide the issue of Ukraine’s entry into NATO, and Russia does not have the right to veto such a decision.
