UN Rapporteur Visits Sweden to Address Religious Freedom

Nazila Ghanea, the United Nations’ special rapporteur on matters of religious freedom, recently concluded a ten-day visit to Sweden. The visit was prompted by a resolution passed by the UN Human Rights Council in July, which condemned Koran burnings as offensive and provocative. During her time in Sweden, Ghanea met with representatives of the government, authorities such as the police, and institutions at various levels.

In her statement, Ghanea noted that Sweden has historically been a homogenous, secular society where religion was seen as a private matter. However, with the influx of migrants, the country’s religious diversity has increased. Ghanea emphasized the need for vigilance in combating intolerance and discrimination against different religions or beliefs within society. She stated that acts of harassment, discrimination, and threats should not be ignored.

According to the UN human rights agency OHCHR, the Swedish authorities have recognized the recent challenges and believe that part of the solution may involve establishing closer ties with faith communities. Ghanea will present a comprehensive report on her visit to Sweden before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva in March.

The visit of Nazila Ghanea highlights the importance of religious freedom and the need for increased dialogue and understanding among different religious groups. By addressing these issues, Sweden aims to create a more inclusive society that respects the rights and beliefs of all its citizens.
