The Central Bank of Libya confirmed in a statement published late yesterday evening that Al-Siddiq Al-Kabeer discussed with the Acting UN Mission Representative Stephanie Khoury the bank’s continued performance of its duties amid the pressures and threats it faces.

This came during a phone call between the two parties, during which the importance of the role of the Central Bank of Libya in maintaining the financial and economic stability of the country was emphasized, according to the statement.

According to the Central Bank, Khoury expressed the United Nations’ full support for the bank, stressing the need to enable it to continue performing its duties.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the mission also welcomed the support of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State for the Central Bank, and their rejection of the “unilateral measures” taken by the Presidential Council “which were considered outside its jurisdiction,” according to the statement.

In the same context, Al Kabir also discussed, during a phone call with British Ambassador Martin Longden, the necessity of preserving the stability and independence of the Central Bank and its continued performance of its role, according to a statement by the Central Bank.

According to the statement, the British Ambassador expressed the United Kingdom’s full support for the Central Bank of Libya in its prominent role over the past years in maintaining financial and economic stability and preserving the country’s capabilities.

These developments come after the Presidential Council announced that it had taken a unanimous decision to change the governor of the Central Bank of Libya and form a new board of directors.

The council said in its statement issued on Sunday that the decision came within the framework of assuming national responsibility to preserve the country’s resources and prevent them from being exposed to any harm.
