UNICEF condemns “sexual violence”, too late according to Israel

The director of Unicef condemned on Wednesday the “sexual violence” committed against Israeli women on October 7, a condemnation that Israel considered late and insufficient because it did not mention, according to it, their perpetrators, the armed men of Hamas.

“The accounts of sexual violence committed on October 7 in Israel are horrific”wrote the director of Unicef, Catherine Russell, on Tuesday, on.

“Survivors must be heard, supported and cared for. The allegations must be fully investigated. We condemn gender-based violence and all forms of violence against women and girls”she added.

The controversy over accusations of rape and sexual violence against women, young girls and children has gained momentum in recent days, with American President Joe Biden calling on Tuesday to “unambiguously condemn” sexual violence committed by Hamas on October 7.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had already repeatedly accused the Islamist movement of sexual violence during its October 7 attacks, reported Tuesday that the Israeli hostages released since had reported “cases of sexual abuse and rape”.

For his part, the spokesperson for the Israeli ministry, Lior Haiat, deplored that he “took UNICEF almost two months to talk about the Israeli victims (…) after an international campaign and pressure »in a message to Agence France-Presse.

He also deplored that Catherine Russell did not mention Hamas in her message on X. “This is another way of turning a blind eye to the atrocities committed by Hamas (…) by not mentioning Hamas, it legitimizes its activities”he said.
