Under Royal impetus, sport established as a national priority

This High Royal Solicitude stems from the Sovereign’s deep conviction regarding the place of sport as a provider of investment that generates jobs and a major component of parallel diplomacy that contributes to the Kingdom’s influence thanks to the exploits of Moroccan athletes.

Sports policy in Morocco focuses not only on the training of high-level athletes but also on the establishment of very high-quality infrastructures which, while providing an ideal framework for the practice of sport, gives the Kingdom a worldwide reputation.

The High Royal Guidelines have breathed new life into the sports sector, particularly through the construction of new sports complexes and the renovation and upgrading of others to host major continental and international events.

The various Royal Initiatives have also made it possible to establish sport as a strategic priority sector. This is demonstrated by the government programme for promoting sport in its social and economic dimensions.

The Royal message addressed to the 2nd National Sports Conference, held in Skhirat in October 2008, outlined the contours of an ambitious national sports policy, establishing sports practice as one of the fundamental rights of citizens.

Moreover, it was under the leadership of His Majesty the King that the right to sport was constitutionalized, for the first time in the history of the Kingdom, since the 2011 Constitution devoted three articles to it (26, 31 and 33), considering the practice of sport as one of the fundamental human rights.

Another manifestation of the Royal commitment to sport is the inauguration in December 2019 of the Maâmoura National Football Center after its renovation and rehabilitation, which the Sovereign kindly named “Mohammed VI Football Complex”.

This structure dedicated to performance and the development of high-level football practice reflects the Royal desire to provide footballers with all the conditions for success.

Furthermore, and in order to demonstrate Morocco’s capacity to organize major global sporting events, HM the King announced, on March 14, 2023, Morocco’s candidacy, along with Spain and Portugal, to host the 2030 Football World Cup, on the occasion of the presentation of the 2022 Excellence Award of the African Football Confederation awarded to the Sovereign.

This joint candidacy, unprecedented in the history of football, which will be that of the junction between Africa and Europe, between the north and the south of the Mediterranean, and between the African, Arab and Euro-Mediterranean worlds, will constitute a beautiful showcase for the Kingdom and for the initiatives and development projects launched across the national territory.

The joint organization of this special edition of the planetary tournament was judged at its true value as a message of peace and inclusion.

“Two continents – Africa and Europe – united not only in a celebration of football, but also in ensuring a unique social and cultural cohesion. What a beautiful message of peace, tolerance and inclusion!” said the president of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, about the candidacy of the three countries linked by history and geography.

The 2030 edition of the World Cup will, according to experts, give a strong boost to the growth dynamic that Morocco is experiencing, under the enlightened leadership of HM King Mohammed VI. A dynamic that continues to arouse admiration because it affects all dimensions of the life of the Moroccan citizen.
