In a speech dedicated to the “Sustainable Oasis Initiative”, as part of the Ministerial Conference of date producing and processing countries, Mr. Sadiki underlined that in accordance with the High Royal Guidelines, the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and Arganier (ANDOZA) was created in 2010 as a public establishment responsible for promoting the global and sustainable development of these vulnerable areas.
ANDOZA, he noted, represents a unique institutional experience to preserve, protect and enhance the ecosystems of oases, as well as to supervise the sustainable and appropriate development of these areas.
The minister highlighted the natural, cultural and urban specificities of traditional oases that even enable them to position themselves as ecosystems with high tourist potential, endowed with rich and varied agricultural productive capacities, in addition to their diversity in terms of fauna and flora.
After listing the constraints likely to disrupt the balance of this type of ecosystem around the world, including isolation, soil erosion, water scarcity or even the threat of desertification, the minister underlined the importance of intensifying efforts to put in place more effective preventive measures and solutions likely to enable oases to face these constraints and adapt to the challenges that arise.
Convinced of the importance of promoting common action in this area, the Kingdom of Morocco launched, on the occasion of the UN Climate Conference (COP22) held in Marrakech in 2016, the Sustainable Oasis Initiative which aims to strengthen the recognition, preservation and development of oasis heritage, as well as to mobilize the resources necessary to achieve these objectives, recalled Mr. Sadiki who also cites the proposal, on this occasion, for the creation of a coalition of parties concerned by the issue of oases, including government authorities, regional and international organizations and representatives of civil society.
For the Minister, the Abu Dhabi Ministerial Conference today constitutes an opportunity to discuss the adoption of operational measures to give the Sustainable Oasis Initiative an institutional aspect.
And to conclude that the Kingdom of Morocco remains fully prepared to provide its expertise and its means to contribute concretely to the orientations and targeted programs which will be adopted by this participatory body.
Organized by the general secretariat of the Khalifa International Date Palm Prize, in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), this event aims to monitor and the evaluation of the results of the integrated management project of the red palm weevil and the creation of an international body for the sustainable development of oases.
This year’s ministerial conference includes two high-level ministerial meetings, the first of which is dedicated to monitoring and evaluating the results of the integrated management of the red palm weevil project, while the second relates to preparation for institutionalization of the Sustainable Oasis Initiative.
