Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: As the Iraqi citizen prepares to welcome the holy month of Ramadan, he faces increasing challenges related to the rise in prices of food commodities, amid the availability of liquidity in the state treasury.

Economist Ali Al-Taie says, “The rise in food commodity prices in Iraq is due to several factors, including the continued deterioration in the agricultural sector and local production, in addition to external factors such as fluctuations in oil prices and the effects of geopolitical conditions on the Iraqi economy.”

Mohamed Attia (food commodity trader) says: “As traders, we face great pressure from import costs and taxes, which forces us to raise the prices of food commodities to compensate for these costs, which directly affects citizens who suffer from the increase in the cost of living.”

Saadoun Hassan (citizen) says: “As a citizen, I suffer a lot from the rise in the prices of food commodities, especially in this period before the month of Ramadan, when it becomes difficult for us to afford the costs of breaking the fast and suhoor, and we hope that the government will take urgent measures to address this phenomenon.”

Challenges faced by citizens in light of the rise in food commodity prices. We must work to take the necessary measures to reduce this rise and ensure the availability of basic commodities at reasonable prices during the holy month of Ramadan.

For the second month in a row, Iraq witnessed a significant increase in the prices of red meat, until it reached 25 thousand Iraqi dinars ($19) per kilogram, with the approaching month of Ramadan, which indicates the continued cases of greed and exploitation practiced by some merchants in the country, while the authorities seek to… Controlling prices through a series of actions and decisions.

Since last July, meat prices have been gradually rising, with criticism of the authorities regarding the lack of control over prices, but the latest increase exceeded $5 on the price of one kilogram, which the Iraqis reject despite the government’s decision to open the import of meat to prevent the rise in prices that are increasing. This prevented many families with limited income from purchasing it.

The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture had previously decided to take measures to reduce the rise in meat prices in the markets, stressing that it would open the door to comprehensive meat imports, in addition to facilitating the transportation of live sheep and cows between the governorates and the Kurdistan region, and allowing the import of meat from all countries of the world except Banned countries.
