LIVES. In San Giacomo, work has started on the rehabilitation of the pedestrian underpass located in front of the school area. This was announced by the ex mayor Christian Bianchi, now provincial councilor: «As United for Laives we are very proud that our entire electoral program from 4 years ago is being implemented. A sign that we have always governed with responsibility and with the achievement of objectives. And United for Laives will do the same in the coming years.”
This was enough to spark political controversy. The Democratic Party, in fact, did not appreciate the triumphalist tones of the former mayor of Laives, also in consideration of how the work will be carried out: “It will be an architectural barrier inaccessible to disabled people, elderly people and parents with strollers.”
Until now, the underpass has always been little used by pedestrians, probably also due to its state of degradation, despite some accidents on the surface during pedestrian crossings. Compared to the initial reconstruction forecasts, in the end it was opted for a complete rehabilitation intervention which does not involve excavations on the roadway above – Via San Giacomo – which would certainly have caused inconvenience to vehicular traffic on the surface.
According to the Democratic Party, the underpass will not be accessible to disabled people in wheelchairs, parents with strollers, elderly people with walking difficulties and the like. «By former mayor Bianchi’s own admission, in fact, the work will not be equipped with a lift», comments city councilor Dino Gagliardini. The Democratic Party points the finger at Bianchi: «The first question we ask ourselves is of a general nature: why does Bianchi announce and discuss municipal works as if he were still the mayor? Does he know that Laives isn’t his thing? The second is what sense there is in a protected crossing that does not protect the most exposed categories at all. Elderly, disabled people, parents with strollers and even women who are several months pregnant will have to cross on the surface. Healthy adults and young people, however, can use the safe underpass. It’s not like a traffic light can eliminate this contradiction.”
«If accessibility is guaranteed and so safe with the traffic lights – adds Andrea Spinelli – why should anyone enter the underpass? Either the crossing point is delicate, and then a protective infrastructure is needed for everyone, or it is not dangerous and then they are carrying out useless work.”
Closing with a touch of venom from Alberto Magnanini: «Bianchi has published his daily timetable as councilor. A very busy job even if he then had to modify the post on social media out of respect for those who pointed out to him that there are harder and less paid jobs. In such a busy agenda I wonder how you find the time to continue to present yourself as mayor of Laives on social media. Did the voters elect him to Palazzo Widmann for these posts or to take care of his skills?
