Because it is a very narrow region, any change in the positioning of one of the organs alters the functioning of the other”, he explains. Pupo explains that, when the bladder and the anterior wall of the vagina begin to descend, are called cystocele (known as a dropped bladder). When it occurs with the posterior wall and the rectum, the name is rectocele. Cases in which the vaginal fundus becomes loose next to the rectum, the name given is enterocele and, when the uterus becomes loose towards the entrance to the vulva, the name given is uterine prolapse. Symptoms may include local discomfort and malfunction of the organs involved, such as constipation and urinary incontinence. The causes include aging, muscle weakness, sedentary lifestyle, hormonal changes — occurring mainly during menopause —, after some types of local surgery, prolonged labor, heavy babies, use of forceps during childbirth, patients with collagen changes and obese patients with higher abdominal pressure. Experts claim that the diagnosis is mostly clinical and can be confirmed with pelvic ultrasound examination. Pupo states that the diagnosis is more common after menopause, as the organs and muscles in the region become stronger with the presence of estrogen and, with the absence of the hormone, these structures atrophy. Treatments involve physiotherapy for pelvic strengthening, use of hormonal therapies, weight loss, control of chronic diseases and, if necessary, corrective surgery for support.
