New Campaign Aims to Raise Awareness of Hereditary Diabetes
Most people are familiar with diabetes types 1 and 2, but there are other forms of diabetes that are less known and less common. One of these forms is hereditary diabetes, which includes MODY, MIDD, and neonatal diabetes. Unfortunately, people with hereditary diabetes often receive a different diagnosis first, leading to incorrect treatment. To combat this issue, the Diabetes Fund is launching a campaign to raise awareness of hereditary forms of diabetes.
Hereditary diabetes is less common than types 1 and 2, which leads to a lack of awareness among both doctors and people living with diabetes. In fact, 80 percent of people with MODY initially receive a different diagnosis. A misdiagnosis can have serious consequences, including receiving inappropriate treatment for years.
Forms of hereditary diabetes, such as MODY, MIDD, and neonatal diabetes, are caused by a change in DNA and are usually inherited from a parent. This means that family members may also be at risk of developing a hereditary form of diabetes, and they can often be tested to determine their risk.
To raise awareness of hereditary diabetes, the Diabetes Fund is encouraging people to test their knowledge about MODY, MIDD, and neonatal diabetes and their characteristics. By educating people about these lesser-known forms of diabetes, the organization hopes to prevent misdiagnosis and ensure that individuals with hereditary diabetes receive the correct treatment.
