HPV, the human papillomavirus, is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted diseases. Around 80 percent of all women and men become infected with it during their lifetime. There are different strains of the virus; certain high-risk strains primarily cause cervical cancer. HPV can also cause vaginal, vulvar, anal and penile cancer as well as mouth and throat cancer.
