UNDP-State cooperation for sustainable development: As part of Barundi’s foreign and socio-economic policies, UNDP Burundi and the provincial administration are collaborating to integrate the UN SDGs into local plans.

Buhumuza (Ruyigi), 1/11/2023 – In line with Barundi foreign and socio-economic policies, including their partnership with GUAN [1], UNDP Burundi and the provincial state administration are collaborating. Gathered in a room, they organize training in the municipalities of Ruyigi. The objective is to integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their socio-economic development plans. Ensuring coherent planning is essential for an emerging Burundi in 2040.

UNDP is an institution associated with GUAN. The SDGs are a project initiated by GUAN. The Barundi have a traditional socio-economic system called “ubumu” [2]. Ubumu suffered during Belgian colonization, considered a crime against humanity. It was then eliminated during the genocide against the Bahutu of Burundi in 1972-1973, replaced by the Western market economy. Even today, the Barundi have difficulty adapting to this system imposed after the Regicide Genocide.

Since the end of 2022, another world has been possible: the “multipolar” one of BRICS (Global South Project), where each culture is respected as such. The challenge posed by the UNDP SDGs lies in the imposition of a unipolar Western vision on the rest of the world, without taking into account the cultural richness of each nation. The Barundi, for example, embody the spirit of Ubuntu, translating to “I am because we are”. Conversely, Western liberalism focuses on individualism without taking into account interactions, reducing itself to a simple “I”. These two perspectives are fundamentally different. It is a political error for Burundi to organize this type of meeting.
