Undrafted Rookie Tyson Bagent to Make First NFL Start for Bears

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Tyson Bagent, an undrafted free agent quarterback, will be making his first NFL start this Sunday for the Chicago Bears. Bagent was thrust into action during last week’s game against the Minnesota Vikings when starting quarterback Justin Fields got injured. Despite a shaky start that resulted in a fumble returned for a touchdown by the Vikings, Bagent showed resilience and led the Bears to a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. Although the Bears ultimately lost the game, Bagent’s performance left a positive impression on his teammates and coaches.

Rookie wide receiver Tyler Scott, who witnessed Bagent’s development since their arrival in Chicago, spoke highly of the young quarterback’s preparation and readiness to step in at any moment. Scott remarked, “He’s always prepared… that’s one thing I noticed because I sit next to him sometimes on the plane. He’s always watching film, always looking over the book because [you’re] one play away.”

Bagent’s journey to the NFL has been unconventional. Despite not receiving much attention from college recruiters, he made a name for himself in high school by leading Martinsville High School to consecutive state championships. Bagent then attended Shepherd University, where he set several NCAA and Division II records, including the all-time touchdown passes record (159) and the all-time passing yards record (17,034). His remarkable college career earned him an invite to the Senior Bowl, where he was coached by Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

Although Bagent went undrafted, the Bears saw potential in him and signed him in May. Throughout the offseason, he impressed coaches and teammates with his accuracy, decision-making, and poise. Bagent climbed up the depth chart, surpassing veteran Nathan Peterman to become the team’s second-string quarterback.

The Bears’ confidence in Bagent has only grown since his promotion to QB2. Assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham commended Bagent’s poise and confidence, stating, “He’s got this moxie, he has this confidence about him.” Cunningham believes that Bagent has a bright future in the NFL.

Now, Bagent faces his biggest test yet as he prepares to start against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7. With Fields sidelined due to a dislocated right thumb, the Bears will depend on the rookie to lead the offense and help the team secure their second victory of the season.

As the Bears strive to overcome their early-season challenges, Bagent’s teammates have faith in his abilities. Tight end Cole Kmet was impressed by Bagent’s accuracy and execution during practices and games. He recounted an instance where Bagent threw a perfect pass during a one-on-one route, showcasing his talent and precision.

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson also expressed his surprise and admiration for Bagent’s accomplishments as a Division II quarterback. Johnson stated, “He honestly surprised me because I didn’t know he was that Division II quarterback that set all them records.”

The Bears hope that Bagent’s success in college and his impressive preseason performances will translate into victories for the team. With their starting quarterback uncertain for now, the Bears believe that their young rookie quarterback has what it takes to deliver when it matters most.
