Experts: “It is difficult to find clues to a rebound”
Asset owners say this year’s outlook is ‘unclear’
The domestic stock market, which received its worst performance since the global financial crisis last year, got off to an unstable start at the beginning of the new year. As U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is about to inaugurate this month amid political instability caused by martial law, experts say it will not be easy to find clues to a rebound in the domestic stock market in the new year. Although it fell slightly on this day, the won-dollar exchange rate, which is about to hit 1,500 won, is also considered a factor in anxiety.
According to the Korea Exchange, on the 2nd, the first trading day of 2025, KOSPI closed at 2,398.94, down 0.55 points (0.02%) from the previous trading day. On this day, KOSPI started up 0.06% from the previous trading day, but the decline increased due to ‘selling’ by foreigners and institutions, and fell to 2,386.84 during the day. Experts believe that the KOSPI has almost reached the bottom, but they unanimously say that there is no opportunity to seek a rebound. Seo Sang-young, a researcher at Mirae Asset Securities, pointed out, “There is no good reason for the index to rise as corporate performance has been revised downward and domestic demand is sluggish.” Jeong Yong-taek, chief economist at IBK Investment & Securities, emphasized, “It is more important than ever for the government to defend the economy through active fiscal policies.”
The won-dollar exchange rate, which was close to 1,500 won, ended weekly trading at 1,466.6 won, down 5.9 won on this day. However, if the impeachment situation prolongs and the dollar strengthening policy begins in earnest following the inauguration of the second Trump administration, a further rise in the exchange rate is expected to be inevitable.
As if reflecting the anxiety of investors, in a survey conducted by Samsung Securities on 341 customers with assets of more than 3 billion won, asset owners used two idioms to describe the financial market in the new year: ‘五里霧中’ (a state of being unable to determine direction or direction) and ‘no direction or direction’. He chose ‘Kyoto Samgul’ (preparing various alternatives to respond to a crisis).
