Unemployment compensation for seniors in the spotlight: here’s what could change

Discussions begin this Friday. The social partners have until mid-March to make proposals. On the table: the employment of seniors and, in particular, the unemployment insurance rules which apply to those over 50. After raising the legal retirement age from 62 to 64, the government wants less favorable rules for unemployed seniors. “I see no reason why there should be a longer period of compensation for those over 55,” said Bruno Le Maire on November 23 on Franceinfo.

A stone thrown into the pond by the Minister of the Economy in the name of the full employment objective (a rate of 5% unemployment) set by Emmanuel Macron. Despite one of the lowest unemployment rates in the French population (5.7%), the employment of seniors remains a weak point compared to our European neighbors with a rate of 56.9% for 55 to 64 year olds (compared to 62 .4% on average on the Old Continent), and 36.2% for those aged 60 to 64 (i.e. more than 12 points below the average).
