The percentage of jobless people in Brazil fell from 8,8% in the first months of 2023, to 8% from April to June. Compared to the same period last year, when the index was 9,3%the fall was 1.3 points percentages. A unemployment rate is the lowest for the second quarter of the year since 2014according to Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The number of unemployed people in the country is 8.6 million, 785 thousand less than in the previous quarter. The employed population rose by 1.1% and reached 98.9 million people, 1.1 million more than in the first three months of the year. The data are part of the PNAD (Continuous National Household Sample Survey)released by the IBGE this Friday, 28.

A increase in the number of workers without a formal contract contributed to the drop in unemployment during the survey period. The total reached 13.1 million people, an increase of 2.4% compared to the previous quarter (303 thousand more). The number of self-employed workers (25.2 million) remained stable in comparison with the previous quarter and had a reduction of 491 thousand people in the year. The informality rate for the rolling quarter ended in June 2023 was 39.2%, compared to a rate of 39.0% in the quarter ended in March 2023, and 40.0% in the quarter ended in June 2022.

The discouraged, those who gave up looking for a vacancy, were 3.7 million in the survey quarter, 199 thousand less than in the first three months of the year. The retreat is 5.1%. In one year, the drop in the total number of discouraged people was 13.9%, with 593,000 fewer people.
