Registered unemployment fell in May in Asturias for the fourth consecutive month and did so at a monthly rate that was almost double the Spanish rate. Unemployment fell by 1,860 people compared to April, a drop of 3.08%, compared to a drop of 1.77% in the national group. Unemployment fell in all the autonomous communities, and Asturias was the sixth where the improvement was most pronounced, only behind the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Galicia and Murcia. The number of unemployed in the region stood at 58,489 people, at levels practically of July 2022, in the midst of the hiring campaign for the holiday season. These are figures that in the month of May have not been seen for fourteen years.

The annual balance shows 3,935 fewer job applicants in the community than in May 2022, which implies an annual decrease of 6.30%, one hundredth more than the Spanish average has fallen (6.29%) in the same period. period. There are ten regions that have improved more than the Principality in registered unemployment in the last twelve months.

The current number of unemployed Asturians is 11,690 less than in the same month of 2019 (prior to the covid), 25,371 below the figure for May 2020 (in the midst of the pandemic) and 21,452 less than that of May 2021, prior to the Ukrainian war.

Unemployment fell in the community compared to a year ago in all productive sectors, led by industry in relative terms (-4.59%) and by services (1,254 fewer unemployed) in absolute figures. In relation to a year ago, the decrease is led in percentage terms by agriculture, industry and construction, while in terms of the number of unemployed it is once again the service sector that leads the improvement, boosted by its own dimension both in employment and in job seekers.

The improvement in the labor market was widespread in all age groups and in both sexes. Among men it fell more than among women in relative rate both with respect to the previous month (-3.57% compared to -2.74%) and with respect to the same period of the previous year, with decreases of 8.49% and 4. 71% respectively. The drop in female unemployment only exceeds that of men in absolute figures compared to April: it fell by 968 women and 892 men.

By age, the biggest fall in the last month occurred among those under 25 years of age (unemployment fell by 8.06%) in this group, while in the interannual rate unemployment among these young people is still growing, although only by 46 people ( 1.26%). In relation to May 2022, the greatest decrease was observed among workers between the ages of 25 and 44, with a drop of 10.26% and 2,396 fewer unemployed.

Hiring in existing work centers in the region increased by 14.03%, with an advance of 9.09% in permanent hiring and 17.59% of temporary, probably due to the seasonal effect, and a decrease in 20.61% of training contracts. In the interannual rate, the three types of contracts decreased, in this order, 20%, 14.52% and 7.14%. Of the total contracts, permanent ones represent 33.78%; temporary, 65.71% and training, 0.5%.

Unemployment fell in 61 councils, remained stable in 6 and increased in the remaining 11 municipalities.

Occupation.

Social Security affiliation in Asturias stood at 377,992 contributors, the highest figure since August (in the middle of the summer campaign) and 2,178 more than in April. The increase (0.58%) was the sixth lowest rate in the country, only better than in Andalusia, the Canary Islands, the Valencian Community, the Basque Country and Madrid. In the annual rate, affiliation grew 1.27%, the lowest progression in Spain, where the average improvement was 2.88%. Even so, employment increased in Asturias in all Social Security schemes except for the sea, which contracted by 18 people. Affiliation rose in all age segments compared to the previous month and, compared to a year ago, it fell in the under-25s and in the 55-45 age group.

In Spain. In the whole of Spain,

The number of contributors to Social Security reached an unprecedented figure in the country’s history in May, with an average affiliation in the month of 20,815,399 people, so it is taken for granted that, with the summer campaign, the country will exceed, also for the first time, 21 million members of the system.

This record figure of 20.81 million is also produced in an adverse and extremely difficult macroeconomic context, with inflation still very high, the supply crisis for industry still not fully resolved, the unusual rise (due to its speed rather than intensity) of interest rates and an acute drought that is slowing down the primary sector and helping to keep core inflation still high. The recovery of tourism and the hotel industry are serving as the main, although not the only, engine of the very strong dynamism of the labor market in a year that, although the GDP forecasts for Spain are constantly being revised upwards and that all forecasts place the country as the most dynamic in the area, will remain –given the international slowdown– far from the country’s 5.5% growth in 2021 and 2022. In May, 200,411 new affiliates were incorporated and in the last twelve months the contributor base increased by 582,676.

In turn, the number of unemployed fell by 49,260 people, thus prolonging the improvement for the third consecutive month after the upturns that occurred in January and February due to seasonality. Registered unemployment in Spain stood at 2,739,110 people last month, the lowest figure since 2008, immediately before the great international crisis. The decrease was widespread in all regions and provinces and in all sectors, except in the group of unemployed without a previous job. The quality of employment also continues to improve.

FADE extols the hotel boom and the Principality highlights the 26-month year-on-year drop in unemployment

The Asturian Government emphasized yesterday the goodness of the regional labor market data and stressed, among other things, that “since January, 32,287 permanent contracts have been signed, which means that one in three jobs created in Asturias has stable character”. He also highlighted that “the Principality has chained 26 months of year-on-year falls in unemployment.” The regional employers’ association, FADE, judged the figures to be very positive and drew attention to the increase in membership in the hospitality industry. CC OO of Asturias, stated that “the end of spring and the beginning of summer are propitious dates for job creation and also for sectoral employers to complain about the lack of professionals, which is a real lack of respect” . “What they must do, rather than regret, is comply with schedules, agreements and salary tables,” added the union. In his opinion, it is very striking that there are 13,000 people with work who continue to seek employment. UGT Asturias drew attention, among other aspects, to the industrial sector, which “showed”, he said, “the greatest declines in unemployment, both in year-on-year terms and with respect to the previous month, as well as being more intense than in the country as a whole “. I also point out that “the quality of employment continues to improve, thanks,” he said, “to the labor reform.” Both the First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño, and the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá, welcomed the good performance of the labor market.
