Unemployment in Brazil falls to lowest level in 10 years in the three-month period ending in May – La Nación

RIO DE JANEIRO, Unemployment in Brazil stood at 7.1 percent in the March-May quarter of this year, equivalent to 7.8 million people out of work and the lowest level for the period since 2014, the state-run Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported on Friday.

According to the report, unemployment in the South American country was 0.7 percentage points (751,000 people) below the previous moving quarter ending in February.

The IBGE indicated that the indicator in turn had a decrease of 1.2 percentage points (1.2 million people) compared to the same period in 2023.

In the mobile quarter ending in May of this year, the employed population reached 101.3 million people, which was a record in the series that began in 2023, with an increase of 1.1 percent (1.1 million people) compared to the previous quarter and 3.0 percent (2.9 million people) in the annual comparison.

The employment rate in Brazil, i.e. the percentage of employed people of working age, stood at 57.6 percent, an increase of 0.5 percentage points in three months and 1.2 percentage points in one year.

The underutilization rate, which refers to people who could work more hours but for various reasons do not, stood at 16.8 percent, equivalent to 19.4 million people, the lowest for a moving quarter ending in May since 2014.

The informality rate was 38.6 percent, equivalent to 39.1 million informal workers, lower than the 38.7 percent of the previous quarter and the 38.9 percent of a year ago.

As for income in Brazil, the average salary in the mobile quarter considered was 3,181 reais (about 575 dollars), stable compared to the previous three months and 5.6 percent higher than May 2023.
