More than 350,000 people are out of work in Ecuador. In February 2024, the unemployment rate was 4.2%, which represents an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to the second month of 2023.
This is the highest unemployment rate since April 2022, when it was 4.7%, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC). Adequate employment stood at 33.9% in February, an increase of 1 percentage point compared to the same month in 2023, according to the National Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment Survey (Enemdu) of the INEC.
Adequate employment includes people who work a full day of 40 hours a week and who receive at least a basic salary of USD 460. But it does not measure whether these people are in the formal or informal sector of the economy. In fact, informal employment increased in February 2024, reaching 55.1%, when a year ago it was 54.3%.
