The Government will change unemployment benefits to “improve and simplify benefits” and encourage entry into the labor market, although “without stigmatizing” anyone.
The Secretary of State for Employment, Joaquín Pérez Rey, made this announcement this Monday in San Sebastián, where he is participating in the European Summit of the Social Economy, organized by the Ministry of Labor within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.
Regarding unemployment benefits, Pérez Rey explained that “there is still no closed model” to undertake the changes, which were committed to Europe, but he has advanced that this will probably be one of the first reforms that the new Government in Spain.

Specifically, the modification would in principle affect the unemployment benefit, which is activated when you are not entitled to the contributory benefit and whose monthly amount is around 480 euros.
Pérez Rey has explained that the Ministry “does not necessarily work on a decreasing model of subsidies” through which the subsidy would increase at the beginning to decrease progressively without changing its total amount.
Change to more groups
What he has made clear is that “the perspective” of this reform is “very clear: to improve and simplify unemployment assistance benefits by giving new opportunities to people who do not have work.”
“Of course, what we are not working on is a reform that stigmatizes the unemployed or that considers that people receive a subsidy of just over 400 euros because they do not want to work or voluntarily join the underground economy. This is a true nonsense,” he denounced.
Precisely what it is about, he stressed, is “changing the assistance provision so that it can serve more groups and in a better way while seeking their integration into the labor market.”
