The unemployment rate (unemployment) was 7.8% in the quarter ended in August this year. This is the lowest level for the index since February 2015 (7.5%). The rate shows the proportion of people who looked for a job and failed during the period in relation to the labor force, which is the sum of employed and unemployed people.

The rate fell in relation to both the previous quarter – ended in May this year (8.3%) – and the quarter ended in August 2022 (8.9%). Data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad) were released this Friday (29), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The unemployed population reached 8.4 million, showing declines of 5.9% (528 thousand people less) compared to the previous quarter and 13.2% (1.3 million people less) compared to the previous year. For IBGE, this is the smallest contingent since June 2015 (8.5 million).

The employed population (99.7 million) grew 1.3% in the quarter (1.3 million more people) and 0.6% (641 thousand more people) in the year. The employment level, that is, the percentage of employed people in the population of working age, was 57%, above the previous quarter (56.4%) and stable in relation to last year.

The usual real income was calculated at R$2,947, showing stability in the quarter and growth of 4.6% in the year. The usual real income volume (R$ 288.9 billion) was a record in the historical series, growing 2.4% compared to the previous quarter and 5.5% in the annual comparison.

The number of employees with a work permit in the private sector – excluding domestic workers – reached 37.25 million, the highest total since February 2015 (37.29 million). In relation to the previous quarter, the increase is 1.1% (422 thousand more people), while compared to the previous year the increase is 3.5% (1.3 million more) in the year.

The total number of unregistered employees in the private sector (13.2 million) also grew in the quarter (2.1% or 266 thousand more people), but remained stable in the year.

The same happened with domestic workers (5.9 million people), who grew compared to the previous quarter (2.8%). There was stability in relation to the quarter ended in August 2022.

The number of self-employed workers (25.4 million people) remained stable compared to the previous quarter and fell 2.0% in the year (509 thousand people less). The employers item (4.2 million people) remained stable in both comparisons.

The informality rate reached 39.1% of the employed population (or 38.9 million informal workers), above the 38.9% in the previous quarter, but below the 39.7% in the same quarter of 2022.

Underutilization

The underutilized population, that is, those who could work more than they do, stood at 20.2 million people, down 2.2% in the quarter and 15.5% in the year.

The population outside the labor force, that is, those over 14 years of age who do not work or look for a job, was 66.8 million, a drop of 0.5% compared to the previous quarter (347 thousand people less) and a increase of 3.4% (2.2 million more) in the annual comparison.

It is the smallest contingent since September 2016 (3.5 million).
