9:28 am: Unesco “firmly” condemns the strikes on Odessa

Friday evening, Unesco “strongly condemned” Russian strikes carried out “early Thursday morning” against the city center of Odessa, which since January has been an integral part of the world heritage of humanity.

“According to a preliminary report, several museums located within the World Heritage site suffered damage, including the Archaeological Museum, the Fleet Museum and the Odessa Literature Museum,” the organization said.

“All had been marked by Unesco and the local authorities with the Blue Shield, the distinctive emblem of the 1954 Hague Convention” for the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict, which was therefore “violated” in Odessa, denounced Unesco.

The Russian attack, “perpetrated only two weeks after the one which destroyed a building” in the historic center of Lviv, another world heritage site, also “coincided with the destruction of the Cultural Center for Folk Art and Art Education in the city of Mykolaiv”, regretted the UN institution.

UNESCO has called for “an end to all attacks on cultural property protected under widely ratified international normative instruments”.
