The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Libya responded to rumors about its plans and intentions to settle asylum seekers inside Libya, considering that “what is being raised about this issue are merely baseless allegations.”

The head of the mission in Libya, Aseer Al-Mudhain, said: “The mission works in accordance with Libyan legislation, and that the United Nations organizations are carrying out their humanitarian work for the temporary presence of Sudanese asylum seekers fleeing the war, in full coordination with the Libyan authorities, and that what is being broadcast about the settlement of asylum seekers inside Libya by the Commission are baseless allegations.”

The UN envoy stressed in a statement, “the importance of the pivotal role played by the Libyan authorities, especially in the city of Kufra, in hosting, supporting and assisting Sudanese fleeing the war in their country in the State of Libya, praising what the Libyan state has provided in various cities, whether in Kufra, Tripoli, Benghazi or others, in terms of capabilities in various sectors, including education and health, to support our Sudanese brothers.”

She also stressed that “the responsibility of hosting these refugees does not fall on the Libyan state alone, but rather the international community must play its humanitarian role in this important response, noting that the response plan prepared by the United Nations agencies and coordinated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the State of Libya is only a small part of meeting the needs for this hosting.”

The head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees mission in Libya, Al-Mudhain, pointed out that “she had conducted a field visit during her last visit to the city of Kufra, and witnessed the capabilities provided by the Libyan state and the amount of aid provided, and that she extends her thanks to the Libyan state, government and people, for what they are providing to the Sudanese brothers,” according to the Wal Agency.
