September 18, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released a new report showing that only 1/3 of the group of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to children are being implemented on schedule.

In the Report “Progress in Welfare Children: Putting Children’s Rights at the Center of the 2030 Agenda,” UNICEF said that to date, half the journey to implement the agenda has passed but only 6% of the world’s total children (about 150 million children) living in 11 countries achieving 50% of the SDGs set for this young population.

According to the report, if the pace of progress remains at the expected rate, by 2030, only 60 countries (with 25% of all children in the world) will achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This means that 1.9 billion children in 140 other countries are left behind.

Globally, out of 48 Sustainable development goals related to children, 33% are on track to reach 50% of the set target, while 19% are off track (have not reached 50% of the set target) and the remaining 48% Insufficient data to evaluate.

In the group of high-income countries, 36% are assessed to be on track, 8% are off track. Meanwhile, in the group of low-income countries, only 19% are on track while 37% are off track.

Overall, globally, child mortality rates have decreased significantly, by about 59% since 2000. Regarding disease prevention vaccination, vaccination coverage rates have increased steadily since 2000.

While most countries have made progress in criteria such as primary school completion rates, the illiteracy rate has only decreased in 10% of member countries between 2015 and 2020.

In addition, at least 33% of countries report a decline in learning levels and the quality of teacher training for preschool and primary schools.

Managing director UNICEF, Catherine Russell, stated that 7 years ago, the world committed to eradicating poverty, hunger and inequality, ensuring everyone, especially children, had access to quality basic services. However, up to now, the time to turn sustainable development commitments into reality is running out, and the consequences of this delay reflect on the lives of children and the sustainability of the Earth.

Therefore, countries need to quickly get back on track, starting with prioritizing children in all actions to achieve the SDGs.

The report was released at the same time as the SDG Summit taking place in New York on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

UNICEF calls on leaders to make commitments at the national level and set higher, realistic goals and take appropriate action. Ms. Russell emphasized that the remaining 7 years can witness many things. Countries can renew and refocus their efforts and create a fairer and healthier world.

To do that, leaders of countries must take the lead in protecting children, putting children’s rights at the center of domestic policies and budget plans./.
