On August 30th and 31st, the 6th Sociology Week took place, an action collectively organized by the Supervised Internship in Sociology, PIBID programs and Pedagogical Residency in Sociology at the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusofonia (Unilab) and schools in region of the Baturité Massif involved with the programs – Escola Liceu Domingos Sávio (Baturité), Escola Maria do Carmo Bezerra (Acarape), Escola Camilo Brasiliense (Redenção), Escola José Ivanilton Nocrato (Guaiúba) and Escola José Tristão Filho (Guaiúba).

The actions were carried out in schools and at Unilab, discussing topics relevant to sociology and educational contexts through lectures, conversation circles, photographic exhibitions, among other cultural and artistic activities.

In the hall of the Catholic church in Acarape there was an afternoon of activities with students from Escola Maria do Carmo Bezerra and residents of the Pedagogical Residency Program in Sociology. The activity was organized by the school teacher and Unilab graduate, Márcio Lima.

A young audience curious about the university world attended the lecture “Brands in contemporary times in the identity formation of the Brazilian people”, given by sociologists and Unilab professors Sebastião André de Lima and Janaína Lobo.

The formation of Brazilian society was addressed, a deeply unequal country in which racism and imperialism are still unresolved issues.

“Brazil favors dominant classes in entering the job market, in professions that make it possible to live with dignity. In societies that make social mobility difficult, being aware of the obstacles, you can set goals to achieve your desires, define plans… Unilab is right next door, with excellent teachers, scholarships, a University Restaurant”, said Sebastião André.

Professor Janaína Lobo talked about her career in public school and how she decided to study Sociology. “She hated sociology, she couldn’t correlate it with reality. Until I went to a lecture with professor Flávio Reis (UFMA) and my vision changed. I can say that my redemption, in all aspects, was Education. I taught many courses, Law, Health, and now I am focusing on Humanities courses. I started the Sociology course in 2003, at the beginning of the Lula era, and I never spent a day without a University Restaurant”, she highlighted.

Regarding inequality in Brazil, the professor drew attention to racism and how police approaches highlight prejudice. “Peripheral youth are targeted by the Police to this day. How many black women enter the job market? Not just black people, but indigenous people, small farmers, minority populations. In 2023 we are still talking about things from centuries ago,” she said.

In addition to the lecture with Unilab teachers, there was a braiding workshop and a hip hop presentation with Unilab Fresh graduate, currently studying for a Master’s degree in Language Studies, at the Malês Campus.

Professor Joana Röwer, coordinator of the Pedagogical Residency in Sociology, presented the school management with a certificate of gratitude and recognition of the institutional partnership. “These are significant meetings of learning and affection. We are bringing the school closer to the university. In a Bachelor’s degree training course, it is at school that you learn to be a teacher. It’s a constant partnership, but it’s different every year,” she highlighted.

Professor Márcio Lima, born in Acarape and graduated from Unilab in 2018, highlighted that the event is an effort by the school to cover all the elements necessary for a comprehensive education and provide students with closer contact with the university. “In addition to the knowledge that the professors brought, we also aimed to show that the university has open doors to welcome them and that it is a possible reality for them”, he declared.

Lima also exposes the continued training nature of the activity. “The discussion does not end at the event. Then, we continued the debate in the classroom”, he pointed out.
