About the International Day of the African Child

Celebrated 15 days after World Children’s Day, the International Day of the African Child draws attention to the reality of thousands of African children who are victims of violence, exploitation and abuse every day.

The date is celebrated on June 16th because it was on this day, in 1976, that the Soweto massacre, in Johannesburg, South Africa, was recorded, but we are celebrating this Saturday, July 8th, due to the end of semester activities. .

Thousands of students took to the streets in protest against the poor quality of education and against the teaching of the Afrikaans language (used only by the country’s white minority) and not their mother tongue. The demonstration, which was intended to be peaceful, ended up being the target of police repression and resulting in weeks of riots, with hundreds of deaths, especially children and adolescents.
