The invitation for the participation of the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusofonia (Unilab) in Turn of Consciousness 2023which honored journalist Glória Maria with the Raça Negra Trophy in its 21st edition and had as its theme “The Glory of being Free”, came from Universidade Zumbi dos Palmares.
The Magnificent Rector of Unilab, prof. Dr. Roque Albuquerque, and the Vice-Rector, profa. Dr. Cláudia Carioca, immediately accepted the invitation and, more than that, participated in some activities among the 500 that took place throughout the scheduled period.
In his participation at table 07 together with other important institutional/international representatives, the Magnificent Rector highlighted that: “despite the difficulties and limitations of being a federal university located in the interior, it is necessary to join forces to overcome inequalities by establishing partnerships who understand the university as a vector of economic, cultural and social transformation”.
The Feijoada da Consciência at Fábrica do Samba, which took place on November 18th, was a very important moment of cultural observation of the carnival manifestation of the samba schools in São Paulo, as well as a moment of visitation to the facilities of the future Unilab hub in capital of São Paulo.
The lunch on November 20th at Universidade Zumbi dos Palmares was a time for dialogue with Congresswoman Juliana Cardoso (PT-SP) about issues involving affirmative actions.
The 6th Edition of Virada da Consciência 2023 culminates in the awarding of the Raça Negra 2023 Trophy, which took place on the night of the 20th and Unilab was present on the occasion.
Making a general assessment of Unilab’s participation in this sixth edition, the Vice-Rector highlighted that “it is a unique event that enhances the struggle and resistance of enslaved black people in Brazil, as well as the fight for rights that Afro-Brazilians demand , which is fully aligned with Unilab guidelines.”

The Magnificent Rector highlights that “the invitation made to Unilab to participate in the most important movement for Brazilian Negritude, both nationally and internationally, demonstrates the relevance that Unilab has achieved in recent years, which is the result of hard work and continuous so that Unilab’s name is consolidated in the anti-racist fight and promotes the creation of a Center for Studies and Research on Slavery, Intolerance, Racism and Racial and Environmental Discrimination” (According to Ordinance Rectory/Unilab No. 376, of December 18, 2023).
